20 Shining Examples of the Two-Toned Kitchen Cabinet Trend

Your kitchen cabinets are one of the first things you see when you walk in a kitchen, and one of the largest elements of the kitchen that offers the most function. You use your cupboards to hold your collection of dishes and other cook wear. Your choice of cabinetry can set the tone for your kitchen, making it visually appealing and interesting, drawing attention to the most popular and most utilized room in the house. One way you can add an interesting touch to your kitchen cabinetry is to incorporate a two-toned look. While many looks with cabinetry can come and go, the two-toned look is a trend that can last through the years. Here are some tips to launch your search for the right two-toned look for your cabinets.

Contrasting colors work best

A powerful statement is what you should be going for. If you are going to two-tone your cabinetry, make the look obvious by using bold, contrasting colors, such as black and white, or blue and white, or dark reds against a lighter, more neutral color. Mixing and matching colors can be risky, like bright greens and reds. These colors can give you and your guests the feeling they are stuck in the Christmas season year-round, if you get the picture.

Related colors are great choices

If you aren’t ready for too bold of colors, try using similar, related colors, such as a neutral creamy tone against a darker brown, or similar examples. Softer shades of yellows or creamy yellows against a creamy green, is also another option for related colors. They are not too dramatic, yet will be noticeable to you and your guests when you step in the kitchen.

Stick with matching woods

If you are using wood cabinets, although you are two-toning the stain, you will want to keep the wood type the same. Mix-matching the wood can be confusing to the eye and it will make your kitchen feel disorganized and out of synch. If part of your kitchen cabinetry is a dark cherry and part if a light oak, you are not keeping a smooth flow and the two do not transition at all.

Keeping the style the same is also important

Along the same lines as the type of wood should be the same, you will also want to stick to the same style of cabinetry throughout. It is hard to follow the flow of a kitchen where half the cabinetry is done in a stainless steel finish, while the rest is in a lively oak. Two-tone cabinetry is primarily focusing on the color tones of the cabinets and not the type or style of it.
