7 Different Types of Covered Deck Designs
If you have a deck in your garden then you are going to get the most out of this if you are able to use it all year round. This includes the summer when the weather is really hot and the winter when there is a higher chance of rain.
A covered deck allows you to do this but it can be expensive. Many people do think that this extra expense is worth it and if this applies to you then you will have several options to choose from as there are a number of different types of covered decking.
1. Roof Extension
This is probably the most expensive option because it involves building onto the second story of your home. There will also be the need to build at least two supporting walls, maybe three. This can mean that the decking areas will seem quite dark on occasions and some people prefer a more open plan look.
2. Awning
Awning can be retracted when it is not needed which is one of the reasons why it is such a good option. Many people think that this will be a fairly cheap option but this is not always the case because the fabric for the awning may be more expensive than you would think. You will also need to decide whether you want the mechanism for retraction to be motorized or not and this will also add to the cost.
3. Pergola
If you are considering a pergola then you may want to get one that has some protection over the top of it otherwise you are not going to be sheltered from the rain. A pergola gives you options that you may not have with other types of covering. For example, they look particularly attractive when they have plants growing up the side of them.
4. Gazebo
Gazebos are usually more associated with a temporary structure on a lawn but they can also be used on your decking. Most people would have dined under a gazebo at some point in their lives and so you may already know what a good experience this is. Gazebos come in a range of different sizes and so it should be fairly easy to find one that fits your decking area.
5. Pavillion
Pavillions can be built onto your deck or you can purchase a portable one which will give you more flexibility. If you are having one built then you are able to specify this size and this makes it more likely that it will the correct size to provide the coverage that you want. Portable pavillions may be quite small and so it would be difficult to fit everyone underneath, especially if you are having visitors over.
6. Screened In Deck
If you live in an area with a lot of bugs then you may want to consider a screened in deck. This will not really protect you from the weather but it can make the time on the deck more comfortable. If you have a roof extension then this can be used to provide extra protection but you need to consider the fact that the extension is going to be expensive anyway and adding extras just adds to the expense.
7. Louvered Roof
A louvered roof is made from interlocking sheets and can be opened and closed as needed. This is similar to the protection that an awning can provide but some people do not think that they look as good as an awning. You will not be able to retract it as you would an awning which means that the structure will always be in place, even when the louvers are open.
The type of covered deck that you choose will ultimately depend on your personal circumstances and what you want to get from your decking. The cost will probably be a deciding factor but it is good to know that you have a number of options available to you. Another important thing that you will have to think about is what the ongoing maintenance costs will be. It is always a good idea to shop around and see what the price difference is between the different options as you may be surprised at what you can actually afford.
