20 Scandinavian Design Kitchen Ideas

What’s not to love about the Scandinavian décor theme? It’s neat, clean, and stylish looking. It is one design type that will make your home look uniquely simple and modest, yet classy. Scandinavian design is a very uncluttered look. You will notice that it’s not ornate in any way, and is based on functionality, keeping in line with the less-is-more theory, even in the kitchen. Most of us spend a great deal of time in the kitchen and you want it to be one that is functional, but beautiful as well. A lot of white is used in a Scandinavian kitchen, and it’s purpose was to help brighten small, cramped kitchens, as well as it aided in adding more light to the room, keeping it as bright as possible when the sun would go down early. If you love the Scandinavian design and want to create this look for your kitchen, it’s not hard to do. Here are some ideas to help you give your kitchen a Scandinavian makeover.

Go white

As mentioned, white is the main idea in a Scandinavian kitchen. Give your kitchen an overall paint job, putting white paint on the walls, and install white cabinetry throughout. Your cabinetry should not be ornate and exhibit detailed architecture. A simple, basic style of cabinetry with clean, clear lines is the idea behind Scandinavian design. Add a white wall of shiny, white subway tiles to your backsplash to breakup the painted walls.

Keep it natural

Scandinavian design is a very natural looking design theme. Natural materials are throughout a Scandinavian room, with wood being one of the main choices. Wood is often found in furniture, flooring, even on the walls and ceiling. Installing a beautiful wood floor and adding wood ceiling tiles, or wood cladding on the walls, is a way to incorporate the use of natural materials in your kitchen. It also helps to cozy up the room and give it a warmer feel when you have white walls and cabinetry.

Accentuate with textures and personal touches

Since the use of saturated colors isn’t a part of the Scandinavian design, one way to help make your kitchen more stylish is to incorporate personal choices in your accessories and textures. Faux fur cushions on your dining chairs, a fuzzy area rug can add personality to a stark-white kitchen. A unique pie safe, or beautiful wooden cubbies for storage mounted on a wall, are ideas for adding personal touches and accessories to the room. They’re simple and functional.

Lighting

Let in the light with any windows you have in your kitchen. The idea is to keep the room open and bright, so lighten the room with as much natural light as you can. Remove curtains or heavy blinds and add artificial lighting where necessary. Task lighting and modern, metallic hanging lights, and ambiance lighting is a way to keep the room lit day and night.
