Transitional décor is a décor theme that merges a couple of styles together to create a beautiful décor style in your home. No matter what room, you can bring the décor style of contemporary and modern together and design a room that is not either, too formal or elaborate, but instead, it’s stylish, classy, and comfortable. This is especially wanted in a living room where so much of your time is spent with family and friends, even alone time just relaxing. The transitional style is understated and uses lots of soft, neutral tones, and gentle curves and contours in its décor pieces. What colors should your use?

This color scheme is a simple one to work with. Stick with soft, neutral tones and muted colors. Creams and light browns are the most popular, but many people opt to use muted shades off blues, greens, corals, grays and other soft tones. Keep furniture tones and colored fabrics neutral, too. The dark woods often work best in a transitional theme, but should be kept less ornamental and decorative and the furniture coverings and fabrics should be quiet and understated, preferably solid colors. A little color in the throw pillows, or splash of color in a vase of flowers are ways to break up some of the low-colored tones.

Mix and match pieces to create the look of modern and contemporary

You can intermingle modern and contemporary furniture to bring a balance of both looks into the room. A contemporary looking coffee table set between modern looking chairs, is one idea, while a contemporary looking sofa placed between to modern side tables can more of both designs to the room, and the looks intermingle well. Find a beautiful modern looking chandelier to hang up and dress up the room with a contemporary throw rug and contemporary window treatments. Lamps can be anything in between and don’t have to match the chandelier, but should compliment the look. Art and deco pieces can be a mix of both contemporary and modern to help complete the look and design.
