How to Determine Which Bed Size is Right for You
When it’s time to buy a new bed, an important consideration to make is the size that would work the best. This includes thinking about the size of the room that you will place the bed in, the size of the person that it’s intended for, the height of the bed and the dimensions. We’ve prepared a mini guide to give you all of the information that you’ll need to find the ideal sized bed.
Room size
The first consideration to make is the size of the room. The bed will need to fit inside and if you have a tiny bedroom with odd contours, a King size may not work well. Measure the space that you plan to place the bed within and this will let you know how large of a bed you can reasonably expect to fit in the area. You can use this chart to determine bed sizes
Mattress size chart:
- California King: 72 inches x 84 inches
- King Beds 76 in x 80 inches
- Queen Beds 60 in x 80 inches
- Full/Double Beds 54 in x 75 inches
- Twin XL Beds 39 in x 80 inches
- Twin Beds 39 in x 75 inches
- Toddler Beds 27 in x 52 inches
The physical height of the occupants
Keeping the mattress size chart in mind, if you’re having problems with your feet hanging over the edge of the bed in a regular King sized bed, you may do better with a California King that adds an extra 4 inches to the length. This is an important factor if you want to achieve a restful and comfortable night’s sleep. If the room you’re using is at least 10 x 12 feet, it should be large enough to accommodate this extra large sized bed. When you’re shopping for a toddler or upgrading your toddler’s bed to a youth bed, you’ll want to consider the current height of your child and the expected growth that he or she will experience over the next five years, unless you want to replace the bed even sooner. Choose a youth bed that will allow for extra growth because kids need to have plenty of space in their beds to get comfortable.
Mattress height
Another important factor when choosing the bed size is the height of the bed. While it’s not an issue for tall people who are physically fit, some smaller people, kids or disabled persons may have extreme difficulty getting in and out of a bed that is too far off the ground. Measure the height of the bed and take this into consideration before you make your final decision.
Queen sized beds
Queen sized beds measure 60 x 80 inches and usually fit well into a room that is under 10 square feet. They’re a more popular choice for people who want a lot of room to move around in but are not interested in a King sized bed. It’s a popular size for couples because it allows room for both sleeping partners to get comfortable with out disturbing the sleep of the other person.
Full-sized beds
Full sized beds are also referred to as double mattresses. They measure 54 inches by 75 inches and although some couples can share a bed of this size, most find them to be too small for two people to comfortably sleep in. They are a good option for teenagers and single adults who like to have the extra room to move around in that is not offered in the twin sized versions. They’re versatile and ideal for small guest bedrooms or rooms that are about 9 x 10 feet in size.
Twin XL beds
Twin XL beds are ideal for growing teens who need the extra length but not the extra width of a full size. This bed measures 39 inches in width and 80 inches in length which is 5 inches longer than the regular twin sized bed. They’re most often used in studio apartments and other small bedroom spaces and only require rooms with 8 x 10 feet of space.
Twin beds
Twin beds are 39 x 75 inches are generally used for children and young teenagers, and sometimes by small to average sized single adults. they can be used in any room that is at least 8 x 10 feet in size. these beds can be laid side by side to achieve the size of a king sized bed and some couples prefer to do this to achieve the size in an easier to move set of beds.
Bunk beds
Bunk beds are another option that come in a variety of different sizes and configuration. They are most commonly used for children and teens who share the same bedroom. It’s always a good idea to measure the dimensions of the room and compare with the dimensions of the bunk bed set to make sure that they will fit properly into the room.
Before you start looking at new beds, measure the room that you will be installing the new bed into. Take into consideration the size of the person or persons who will sleep in the bed and the amount of room that is required for comfortable sleeping conditions. Also choose the most appropriate height for the bed so it is comfortable and easy to climb in and out of. By thinking about these things in advance and planning ahead, you can find the perfect bed size the first time around.
