Can You Use Drano in a Dishwasher Pipe?

Dishwasher

Drano is a popular brand of drain cleaner. It is supposed to be used on either kitchen sinks, bathroom sinks, clogged showers, and clogged bathtubs. However, it isn’t uncommon for people to wonder whether it can be used on other things as well.

Can You Use Drano in a Dishwasher?

It is a good idea for people to use household products in the way that they were intended. This is particularly true for those that can be potentially harmful. By this point, chances are good that interested individuals can guess that Drano should not be used for dishwashers for a number of reasons. For starters, there is no guarantee that the dishwasher is failing to drain because of a clogged pipe. That tends to be the case. However, it is possible for a dishwasher to fail to drain because its water pump has broken down. If that is the case, Drano can’t do anything even from a purely theoretical perspective. Speaking of which, there is no guarantee that someone’s expectations will match up with the reality of things. If someone expects Drano to help out with a dishwasher, chances are very good that they are going to get a very unpleasant surprise. Said drain cleaner is powerful enough to do damage to both metal and plastic. This is particularly problematic for dishwashers because their pipes tend to be on the more fragile side of things. Even worse, there are a couple of other issues that interested individuals will need to watch out for. One, Drano can cause damage to the dishwasher’s other components, meaning that it can cause further problems that will need to be fixed. Two, Drano can splash onto the dishes if it hasn’t been 100 percent drained away, meaning that it can be a threat to someone’s personal wellbeing. As such, interested individuals should never try to use this drain cleaner for resolving anything when it comes to their dishwasher.

Why Should You Be Cautious About Drano?

People should be very cautious when it comes to Drano. It is mean to clear out clogs, so it should come as no surprise to learn that it isn’t something that interested individuals will want to come into contact with. Simply put, Drano is extremely caustic, which makes sense because it needs to clear out both organic and inorganic materials. Furthermore, one of its chemical reactions generates heat. This is important because this increases the rate at which Drano can clear out both organic and inorganic materials. Simultaneously, it can be problematic because there is enough heat generated to cause damage just because of that. The worst scenario would be when Drano fails to clear out a clog fast enough because that will give these issues extra time in which to damage whatever it is that it has been poured into.

As such, Drano isn’t necessarily the best thing to use. Over time, it can weaken pipes as well as the substances responsible for holding those pipes together, thus increasing the chances of leaks, breaks, and even worse issues. On top of that, while Drano can clear clogs, it won’t be able to do anything about any fundamental issues that are contributing to clogs. If anything, it might be helpful in the short run but harmful in the long run because of how repeated use will worsen its damaging effects. If people are concerned about the environment, they should be even more cautious about the use of Drano. Unsurprisingly, it is capable of entering the environment through the sewage system. There, Drano can have a harmful effect on everything reliant on the environment, which includes us in the long run as well.

Please note that there are also certain circumstances under which Drano can be extra-problematic. For example, it releases toxic fumes when it works, which are capable of causing irritation and worse when breathed in by people who are in the vicinity. This is particularly bad for people who are susceptible to these things, whether because they are older, younger, or have a respiratory condition of some kind. As such, Drano should be used in well-ventilated areas. Otherwise, higher concentrations of those toxic fumes mean increased chances for various issues to come up. Similarly, interested individuals should never mix Drano with other household products. Something that happens a lot because of people trying one drain cleaner after another, thus causing them to mix together because those that have already been tried haven’t had the chance to drain away. Unsurprisingly, toxic fumes are a very common consequence. However, there are other potential outcomes as well, with an excellent example being an explosion in the plumbing that will cause boiling water to burst out of the sink. Of course, the unsuitability of Drano for dishwashers should make it clear that there are plenty of other places where it shouldn’t be used either. For instance, it should not be used on toilet bowls because the resulting heat can crack the porcelain given enough time. If the clog gets cleared right away, that might not be an issue; if the clog doesn’t get cleared right away, well, suffice to say that can be a serious problem.

What Should You Do to Unclog a Dishwasher Instead?

There are various options available to people who have a clogged dishwasher. First, they are going to need to disconnect the dishwasher as well as empty it of any water that might be remaining. After which, people are supposed to check various parts such as the drain, the filter, and the air gap to see if there is something wrong with them that they can fix. For instance, it is possible that one of these things has become too dirty, meaning that everything will be fine with some cleaning. Similarly, interested individuals will need to check the drain hose to see if there are any bends or other obvious issues with it. Eventually, they might need to disconnect it before visually inspecting it for signs of internal blockage. Ultimately, if people aren’t sure about what they are doing, they might want to call in a specialist who can take care of such problems for them. That might be the more expensive path but that tends to be the more reliable path as well.
