The 20 Oldest Homes in the United States

1. Fairbanks House in Dedham, Mass

Built by the Fairbanks family, which included six children, this timber-framed house was constructed from cedar and oak between 1637 and 1641. Members of the Fairbanks family continued to live in the home for the next eight generations. In 1904, the Fairbanks Family Association opened it up to the public as a historic house museum. Although several additions have been made over the years, the original two-story home, which included a gable roof and a center chimney, is right in the middle. The exterior of the home was covered with oak clapboards and narrow cedar planks, which remain today. There is some question as to whether or not the home’s original frame included bricks, windows, and tiles imported from England.
