The Best Methods to Get Milk Out of the Carpet

While the carpet on your floor may look and feel great, it is important to keep in clean if you want it to stay that way. When it comes to dust and allergens, a good vacuum cleaner can do wonders. When items are spilled on the carpet, there are certain stain removers that you can use in order to take care of it. However, there are some liquids that really do not mix with carpet. Milk is one of those. This is a troubling occurrence that nearly every homeowner with carpet dreads. No matter how careful you are, accidents can happen when you else expect them to. Instead of fretting over it, here are a few tips to help you get the milk out of your carpet.

Start by Trying to Blot it Out

This is a technique that works best if you are actually around to see the milk spill on the carpet. Time is of the essence here. You will want to quickly get a bunch of paper towels and start to blot out the milk. You can also use an absorbent cloth to do this. If you use a cloth, make sure it is clean and white so that the color does not bleed into the carpet. The key here is to keep blotting around the entire until the paper towels or cloth that you are using end up being dry. Do this carefully and do not rush. The objective is to absorb as much of the mile as possible before it has time to solidify.

With carpet, it does not take long for milk to absorb into the carpet. If you think that this has already happened in your case, then you will want to apply a bit of pressure as you start blotting. What you want to do is work into the fibers of the carpet in order to absorb as much of the milk that has gotten deep into the carpet. You may not be able to get it all up, but the key is to blot out as much of the milk as you can at this stage.

You Can Wash the Carpet

If you were not able to blot out the milk, or the spill occurred quite some time ago, you will need to get ready to wash the carpet. Obviously, you cannot just pull up the carpet and put it in the washing machine, so you have to get a bit creative here. One suggestion is to create your own soap that is gentle enough to work on carpets. Start by getting a large bowl out of the kitchen. Go ahead and fill up with some cold water. Add a bit of gentle dishwashing liquid to the water. If you do not have any handy, then some liquid hand soap will work just as well. Give the mixture a stir in order to get it ready to apply to the carpet.

What you will want to do now is to take a clean sponge and dip into the soap solution that you just made. If you do not have a clean sponge handy, you can also a soft cloth as long as it is free of lint. Once you have dipped one of the items into the liquid, wring out as much as you can so that it is fairly dry before applying to the carpet. You want the carpet to become a bit damp as you start to clean the milk, but you do not want it to become wet.

Take the sponge or cloth and start from an outside corner of the spill. You will want to work your way into the center, all the while blotting gently to wipe away the stain. Every few times, rinse the sponge or clot out, dip into the solution, wring out, and then do it again. Keep repeating this process until you are satisfied with the results. Once that is done, you will want to dry the entire area that you have just cleaned with a dry cloth.

Getting Rid of the Residue

For various reasons, you might come across a milk spill that has been sitting for quite some time. In fact, you might just have never noticed it before. Naturally, this seems to happen most when you have children or a mischievous husband living in the house. Regardless of why you never noticed it, that milk is probably well hardened by now. As such, it requires a slightly different approach in order to effectively out of the carpet. You will need to start the process by working to get rid of the milk residue that has built up around the carpet. This is because the milk has had way too long to dry. Before you can wash the area of the carpet that has been affected, you will want to get rid of the residue.

Getting rid of the residue on a carpet usually involve scraping away the milk that has dried in place. You may not be able to get it all up, but do the best that you can. Once you have scraped it all away, you will be left with flakes all around. Go ahead and vacuum those up, or pick them up with your hands if you feel so inclined. Once you have done this, you will want to get a spray bottle filled with water, Go ahead and spray the water over the area and then put some laundry soap over the top. Once you have done that, you can use a cloth that you have to dampen with cool water to go ahead and wipe that carpet until it is clean. After that, remember to clean another clean towel and wipe the entire area dry.

These tips are designed to help you get milk out of your carpet. It might take some time and patience, but it can be done. Just go slow and you may find that you can’t even tell that milk was every spilled there when you are finished.
