The 20 Oldest Homes in the United States
17. Defoe-Mooar-Wright House in Pownal, VT
Built between the 1750s and 1762, the Defoe-Mooar-Wright House is the oldest house in Vermont. There is a bit of confusion regarding who built the home, though researchers have narrowed it down to John Defoe, a Tory who was captured and imprisoned during the 1776 Battle of Bennington, or Charles Wright, who used it as a tavern (The Mooar name is included because they are the first family anyone can remember living in the home.) The original home featured a gabled cedar roof included four rooms spread over two stories with a fireplace. Later, a storage room was added on the back. In 2009, the home was purchased by Gary and Jean Dickinson. Thanks to their extensive knowledge of historic restoration, they were able to not only authentically restore the property, but make it their home.
