The 20 Oldest Homes in the United States
18. LaPointe-Krebs House in Pascagoula, MS
Believed to have been built in 1757, the LaPointe-Krebs House is thought to be the oldest house still standing in the Deep South. Very little is known about the home’s history or who lived there, which may be why professors at the University of Southern Mississippi are so intrigued by the property. Through their research, they have determined that the home started out as two rooms with a fireplace and was constructed using tabby, a material similar to concrete that is created by mixing slaked lime, ash, shell, and sand together before pouring it into forms made from wooden timbers and allowing it to harden. The floors were also constructed from tabby, while the supporting posts, beams, and rafters from pit-sawn lumber. The home has been renovated and added to over the years. Currently, the house is undergoing an extensive restoration project and will likely be open to the public in the future.
