The 20 Oldest Homes in the United States
2. C.A. Nothnagle Log House in Gibbstown, NJ
Built by Swedish immigrants somewhere between 1638 and 1643, the Nothnagle Cabin just happens to be for sale, as of October 2017. As for the asking price of the oldest log cabin in the Western Hemisphere, that would be $2.9 million. (This includes 1.3 acres and plenty of museum-quality artifacts.) In 1976, the house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Despite being built by the Swedish, the log cabin was constructed using a Finnish building method. For example, the logs feature corners carved in an angled manner (known as “full dove-tail”) to ensure they stay together and the fireplace has the chimney included inside the structure to provide extra warmth. Any cracks in the wood are repaired using clay dug from a nearby farm.
