20 Beautiful Curtain Ideas for the Bedroom

Your bedroom is your sanctuary and retreat. You want it to be as comfortable and serene as possible so that when you go to it, you can shut the rest of the world out and rest. Decorating your bedroom, or even your child’s bedroom, is what makes it a restful, peaceful room. Curtains are one of the biggest components of a bedroom, and most decorators will tell you that it is the curtains that make the room. They tie everything else in the room, together. Knowing tips on how to choose curtains for your bedroom can help you buy just the right ones that give your room the look, feel, character, and lighting that you want. Here are a few tips when considering which types of window dressings to choose.

1. Fabrics

Choosing the right fabric is important as it dictates how the curtains will hang and fold. The best fabrics for a window are velvet, faux silk, and linen. They’re the most durable and they hang the best in a window. Faux silk holds up the best in a really sunny room and is the most durable of all the materials. If you choose too heavy of a material, it can hang awkwardly and will not fold right when they’re drawn. Bright colors fade faster in particularly sunny rooms, so staying away from bright reds and other similar colors, will help retain the look of your room with the curtains.

2. Height

Hanging your curtains at the right height can make or break the look of the window, and even the entire room. Many people think curtains should be hung right at the top of the window or just above the trim, however, curtains should actually be hung approximately 6 inches above the window trim to help add height to the window and create a grandeur visual appeal to the windows and the curtains.

3. Wash or dry-clean

Depending on the type of room you are hanging the curtains in, you may want to hang machine washable curtains as opposed to dry clean only. Many homeowners prefer to hang machine washable curtains in kids bedrooms and rooms where there may be more dust collection for quicker and easier washing options. Depending on how often you think you may need to wash them, washing instructions should play a role in your curtain choice because, keep in mind, that if you try to wash dry clean only curtains in a machine, this can ruin them.
