The 20 Oldest Homes in the United States
14. Lane House in Edenton, NC
When Steve and Linda Lane purchased this home in 2009, they intended to use it as a rental property. However, since the house was in poor shape and leaned depending on the direction the wind blew, work had to be done first. After removing wood paneling, they discovered timber boring, as well as hand-hewn beams joined together with handmade nails and wooden pegs. Historians were brought in and identified antique chair rails, hand-blown glass windowpanes, and ogee molding used to build homes in the 18th century. After considerable research, which included three-ring science, historians believe this four room home was built between 1719 and 1721. The home had already been placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001, based on the belief the Gothic Revival-style home was built around 1883. Today, it is privately owned.
