The 20 Oldest Homes in the United States
13. McIntire Garrison House in York, ME
Built along the York River around 1701, the McIntire Garrison House is believed to have been the home of the son of a Scottish highlander who had been deported to America by Oliver Cromwell following the Battle of Dunbar in 1650. The two-story Garrison-style structure was constructed using heavy logs dovetailed at the joints to protect against the weather and possible raids by Native Americans. It was, then, covered with wooden clapboards. Inside, there is a large chimney, wooden floors, and unfinished ceilings. The McIntire Garrison House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1968 and appears to be privately owned.
