How Annamarie Tendler Mulaney Taught Herself How to Make Victorian Lamp Shades

Makeup artist Annamarie Tendler Mulaney had a successful career in her chosen field and had even authored two separate books. However, she found herself in a situation where she sort of fell into a brand new business of her own, all because she wanted to learn how to decorate her home the way she wanted it to look.

It all started when she wanted to find a Victorian lamp shade for her home. She wasn’t satisfied with the examples that she was able to find in local stores, so she eventually set out searching for one online. She still couldn’t find anything that suited her tastes, but she did run across something that seemed rather unique. She found an educational DVD that showed her how to make her own Victorian lamp shades. She decided that if she wanted to decorate her home so that it would look the way she wanted it to, she would have to take matters into her own hands and start making her own lamp shades. Therefore, she made the decision to purchase the DVD that showed her how to do it and the rest, as they say, is history.

Mulaney said that after watching the DVD, she made a practice lamp shade that she wasn’t really all that satisfied with, eventually deciding to throw it into the garbage. On the second try, she got it right and before she knew it, she had made several more. Friends and family started to ask where she got these lamp shades and when she told them that she had made them herself, a brand new business was started without her ever intending for that to be the ultimate outcome.

Today, Mulaney makes all kinds of Victorian lamp shades for other individuals. Many of the lamp shades that she has made have ended up in magazines, allowing her to showcase her work. She says that she’s always been inclined to do different types of crafts and she’s always been good at working with her hands, so this seemed to be a natural progression of the two.

The truth is, her lamp shade making business became so popular that she now considers it a full-time job. She’s made all kinds of lamp shades of various styles and colors, hand making every piece until each one is finished. She can even make custom designs, something that her customers seem to love.

It’s rather amazing to think that all of this stems from the desire to have a particular lamp shade in her home, but that’s exactly what happened. Even though she didn’t really plan on developing the business, she says that she enjoys making the lamp shades and that by all accounts, she has enjoyed having the opportunity to grow and develop her skills. It’s just one more thing that she can add to her repertoire of accomplishments.

It’s not really all that uncommon for people that have this type of mindset to take matters into their own hands. This is especially true when it comes to people that enjoy doing some type of craft work, whether it’s something very basic or a more challenging nature. These types of individuals always look for new opportunities to do something different, and in this particular case, the need to do something was born out of the impossibility of finding anything suitable through any other means.

By all accounts, Mulaney admits that this business sort of fell into her lap. She says that she never intended to do any kind of marketing with the lamp shades and that at first, her only goal was to decorate her home the way she wanted to. It wasn’t until people started seeing the lamp shades that she had made and requesting one of their own that she realized the possibility for turning this into a money-making business. Even then, she still didn’t really have that particular goal on her radar, as she already had a successful career. However, word spread quickly and before she knew it, she had enough requests to keep her busy practically all the time. It’s understandable when you look at the quality and workmanship that she puts into each lamp shade she makes.
