The 20 Oldest Homes in the United States

3. Henry Whitfield House in Guilford, CT

Built in 1639 as a home for Henry Whitfield, a Puritan who fled religious persecution in England and became Guilford’s first minister, his wife, and their 9 children, this stone house is believed to have been built with the assistance of local Menunkatuk Indians, who helped transport the stone from quarries in the area. The house boasts walls that are almost two feet thick and were mortared together using a mixture of crushed oyster shell and yellow clay. Inside, oak timber was used to create rafters and joists, while the room partitions were made of white or pine wood planks. Owned by the city of Guilford since 1904, the Whitfield House serves as a museum and was added to the National Register of Historic places in 1972.
