5. The Old House in Cutchogue, NY

Considered by many in the architectural community to be a “superb example of First Period architecture in the nation,” the Old House is thought to have been built in 1649. The English-style, medieval home was built by John Budd using oak beams and posts and included a huge fluted chimney, paneled partitions to create rooms, , and leaded glass windows. However, the home was initially located in Southold, NY. After being given to Benjamin Horton in 1661 when he married Budd’s daughter, Anna, it was moved to its current location. You may also see the home referred to as the “John Bud House” or the “Benjamin Horton House.” The home, designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1962, is run as a museum by the Cutchogue-New Suffolk Historical Council.
