The 20 Oldest Homes in the United States

12. Middleburg Plantation in Huger, SC

Constructed by Benjamin Simons on a 100-acre plot in 1697 for his family that included 14 children, Middleburg Plantation started off as a two-story home with two rooms per floor. It featured a single chimney and a large porch on both the front and back of the house. Multiple additions have been made over the years. It was named after Middleburg, Zeeland, Netherlands, where Simons lived as a child. The privately owned home retains its simple exterior, with clapboarded walls, two chimneys, and a hipped roof, as well as several of its original windows, which have a green tint. It was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1970 and was sold for $3.5 million in 2015. On a side note, the house barely survived the Revolutionary War. You can still see where a British general etched his name on a window pane and there is a mark on a front column that was made by Lt. Colonel Banastre Tarelton, the Most Hated Officer in America, using a saber.
