20 Creative Shelving Ideas to Maximize Space

It seems like there is just never enough space in your home to store what you want to store, or display things the way you would, if you only had more shelving. Many times, the space in a home is limited for shelving and you need to optimize the space you have, but shelves come in handy for all kinds of things. We always seem to be collecting things, over the years, that there just isn’t enough places to put them; books, dishes, collectibles, pictures, and a million other things. Some homes are designed with shelving units already built-in, while other homes have little, to no shelving available, unless you put it in yourself. There are so many creative ways you can design and add shelving to your home if you just look through your home and find areas of your home where you can be creative. If you have limited space in your home but want to add shelving, here are some ideas you can do.

Cubby

If you have cubby areas in a hidden alcove that may be a bit of an awkward space that you aren’t sure what to do with it, try adding some creative shelves in the cubby. You can have different lengths of shelves to fit the longer and more narrow sizes of the alcove, and it’s a great place to display things like books, pictures, knick-knacks, or other collectibles. Shelves in an alcove can be a great attention-getter for guests, and you utilize an otherwise, unused space.

Under stairwells

Sometimes, homes have stairwells that expose wall space under or behind it. Most people do not think to use the walls under or on the backside of their stairwells, unless they are just hanging some pictures. Try designing some wall shelves and hanging them on the wall under your stairwell, or under the stair slope to set family pictures, art pieces, display a few books, or set out a few knick-knacks.

Work station

Do you have a desk in your office or child’s bedroom where some shelves would be helpful for books or other items, but you just don’t have a lot of space for a big shelving unit? A unit of stylish shelves built-in on a wall adjacent to where the desk sits is a way to add extra storage for books and other items that come in handy for a child or office setting. And the shelves can look as if they are tied right into the desk, as part of a desk unit, when they are hung on a wall congruent with the desk, and you won’t have to take up floor space with a big, bulky shelving unit.

Wraparound units

Do you have a freestanding column in a kitchen that serves no functional purpose? You can create a wraparound shelving unit, using the column as the shelving unit base. The cool effect will give your kitchen a focal point as well as it will serve a great purpose for storage or display unit.

Corner shelves

Most kitchens have a corner or two where the space isn’t being utilized for anything, you may even say that it is wasted space, and we all know that you need a lot of storage space in a kitchen. It is probably the one room in the home that has the biggest need for storage of any other room. Why not use your corners for added shelving units. The shelves can be as long or short as the corner allows, and it can add a lot of much needed space for storing dishware and other kitchen items.

No matter how much square footage your home has, space can always be something you want to optimize, so why not look for non-conventional places to add shelves for added storage. Creativity is the key, and you when you really look around your home, you are sure to find areas you can add shelves.
